# Reduction Targets

Set an emissions reduction target against your base year and track actual performance toward it by GHG scope and category.

Reduction Targets let you set an emissions reduction goal against a base year and track actual performance toward it, broken down by [GHG Protocol Scope](/carbon/configuration/reporting-frameworks/ghg-protocol/scopes-and-categories.md) and category. Targets are set once at the organisation level and apply uniformly across all entities — they aren't configured per entity.

{% hint style="info" %}
The current target-setting approach is a straightforward, science-aligned target. It doesn't yet validate against a formal methodology — SBTi-aligned target setting is planned for a future release.
{% endhint %}

Open **Actions** in the left-hand navigation, then select **Targets**. The page opens on the **Reduction** tab, alongside **Coverage** and **Log**. The header shows your base year and target year, for example *Base year FY20 · Target year FY30*.

Use the **Carbon** / **Utilities** toggle at the top right to switch between your carbon reduction targets and your utilities targets. This article covers the Carbon view.

### Reading the chart

The chart plots emissions against your target for the selected period, with a title naming the year in view — for example *FY27 Emissions vs Target*. Three controls sit above it:

* **Annual** / **Selected FY** — the period the chart covers. **Selected FY** follows the financial year selector below the chart, so moving between years redraws it; **Annual** plots year on year.
* **All** / **Scope 1** / **Scope 2** / **Scope 3** — filters the chart to a single scope.
* The export icon downloads the chart as displayed.

Below those, the **Scope 1**, **Scope 2**, **Scope 3**, and **Target Emissions** chips show or hide each series. Hover a column to see the scope breakdown and the target for that month.

A **Gross Total** bar below the chart shows actual emissions against target for the selected period as a running total and percentage, for example `68,500tCO₂e / 80,750.00tCO₂e (76.5%)`.

### Reading the table

Between the chart and the table, a search box filters by GHG subcategory, arrows move between financial years — the same selector that drives the chart's **Selected FY** view — and an export icon downloads the table exactly as currently displayed.

| Column                                   | Description                                                                                                                                                                                                         |
| ---------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| GHG Category | Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3, plus Reductions and the Gross and Net Emissions totals. |
| Base Year tCO₂e | The row's emissions in your [base year](/carbon/configuration/reporting-settings/base-year.md). |
| \[Selected FY] (to date) | Actual emissions from the start of the selected financial year up to now, for example *FY27 (to date) tCO₂e*. |
| Target (to date) | The target value for the same to-date period. |
| Target Reduction / \[Target Year] Target | The overall target for the row. Under a percentage target the column reads **Target Reduction** and shows a percentage; under an absolute target it is named for your target year, for example *FY30 Target tCO₂e*. |
| Pace (to date) | A coloured bar and signed percentage comparing the to-date actual against Target (to date). |
| Variance (to date) tCO₂e | The difference between to-date actual and to-date target emissions, negative when you are under target. |

{% hint style="info" %}
**Target (to date)** is prorated to the current financial year: it only counts up to the current reporting period and excludes any incomplete months.
{% endhint %}

#### How far targets reach down the table

Targets are set per scope in the Carbon Targets dialog, so how far they reach depends on the **Target Type** chosen when the target was set:

* With **Percentage of Base Year**, a scope row expands to its subcategories — Scope 2 to Electricity, Purchased Heat, Purchased Cooling, and Purchased Steam, for example. Each subcategory inherits its scope's percentage and shows its own Target (to date), Target Reduction, Pace, and Variance.
* With **Absolute Values**, the table is flat. A tCO₂e figure set for a whole scope can't be split across its subcategories, so scopes are reported as single rows with no breakdown.

#### Pace and variance

**Pace** is a to-date measure. It's colour-coded green when a row is tracking ahead of its to-date target, and red when it is over.

The **Reductions** row shows Base Year and to-date actuals only — no target, pace, or variance — since reductions aren't tracked against a target the way emissions categories are. The **Net Emissions Total** beneath it does carry a target, pace, and variance.

### Scope 2 basis

Scope 2, and any Scope 3 categories that share the same purchased-energy split (for example Category 3 transmission and distribution losses), can be measured location-based or market-based — the same distinction used by [Market & Location Based Reporting](/carbon/configuration/reporting-frameworks/ghg-protocol/market-and-location-based-reporting.md) elsewhere in BraveGen Carbon.

The Reduction table reports on whichever basis is set as your organisation's primary [Scope 2 method](/carbon/configuration/reporting-settings/scope-2-methodology.md), and labels the affected rows accordingly — *Scope 2 - Market-based*, *Electricity - Market-based*, *Gross Market-based Emissions*, and so on.

{% hint style="info" %}
The Scope 2 method is an organisation-level setting, not part of the target. It isn't chosen in the Carbon Targets dialog — changing it changes the basis your targets are set and tracked against.
{% endhint %}

### Gross and net emissions totals

**Gross Emissions** totals Scope 1–3 on the reporting basis in use. [Reductions](/carbon/configuration/reporting-frameworks/ghg-protocol/scopes-and-categories/reductions.md) — offsets, certificates, and removals tracked separately from gross emissions — are netted off to produce the **Net Emissions Total**.

On both total rows, the target column shows the absolute target-year figure in tCO₂e even under a percentage target, since a single percentage can't represent a total made up of scopes with different target percentages.

## Setting a reduction target

Only Admin users can create or edit reduction targets. Select **Carbon Targets** above the chart to open the **Carbon Targets** dialog.

<table><thead><tr><th width="203.9921875">Field</th><th>Description</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Target Year</td><td>The financial year the target applies to, e.g. <code>FY30</code>. The year you choose also names the target column in the table below.</td></tr><tr><td>Reduction Approach</td><td>Fixed to <strong>Absolute</strong>. <em>Intensity is planned but not yet available, and is shown greyed out.</em></td></tr><tr><td>Target Type</td><td><strong>Absolute Values</strong> sets a fixed tCO₂e target, and applies to GHG scope totals only. <strong>Percentage of Base Year</strong> sets a percentage reduction from your base year figure, and applies to all related GHG inventory.</td></tr></tbody></table>

**Target Type** changes what the target column accepts — a tCO₂e figure or a percentage. Choose it before entering your targets.

### The category table

Below these settings, a table lists each GHG scope alongside its Base Year tCO₂e:

| Column                | Description                                                                                                                               |
| --------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| GHG Category          | Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3.                                                                                                            |
| Base Year tCO₂e       | The scope's emissions in your [base year](/carbon/configuration/reporting-settings/base-year.md). Read-only.                              |
| \[Target Year] Target | Your target for that scope. The column header carries the target year and the unit, for example *FY30 Target tCO₂e* or *FY30 Target (%)*. |

Enter a figure against Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 — a target tCO₂e value with **Target Type** set to **Absolute Values**, or a percentage reduction from the base year with **Percentage of Base Year**.

A percentage target is inherited by the scope's subcategories, so they are tracked against it individually in the Reduction table. An absolute target applies to the scope total only.

Scope 2 is labelled with your organisation's primary [Scope 2 method](/carbon/configuration/reporting-settings/scope-2-methodology.md) — for example *Scope 2 (Market-based)* — because that is the basis your target is set against.

{% hint style="info" %}
The dialog no longer captures planned reduction actions. Planned impact is expected to return as a dedicated reduction Projects feature in a future release.
{% endhint %}

The **Gross Emissions** row updates live as you edit, totalling the base year and target figures across all three scopes. Select **Update Targets** to save your changes, or **Cancel** to discard them. A confirmation toast appears once targets are updated.

### Summary

* Reduction Targets are set once at the organisation level and applied uniformly across entities, tracking actual emissions against a target by GHG scope and category from your base year to a chosen target year.
* A percentage target reaches down to subcategories; an absolute target applies at scope level only.
* The table reports on your organisation's primary Scope 2 method and labels the affected rows with it.
* Only Admin users can set targets, using the Carbon Targets dialog to choose the target year and an absolute or percentage-of-base-year target type, then entering a target for Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3.
