# Manual Adjustments

Manually add or correct a source's activity and cost data, without a file upload or automated process.

Use manual adjustments to add values to a source alongside the data BraveGen ingests through [File Upload](/carbon/core-concepts/data-collection/processes/file-upload.md) or [Automation](/carbon/core-concepts/data-collection/processes/automation.md), for periods where the incoming data is missing, incomplete, or needs correcting. You can top up a source with a value it never captured (eg. an invoice a supplier sends through late), or offset a period's activity or cost with a correcting entry, without touching the ingested records themselves.

Manual adjustments sit on top of a source's ingested history rather than replacing it. The dialog shows both the original figures and the totals after your adjustment, so you can check the effect before you save.

## Opening the Manual Adjustment dialog

From an entity's [Activity Source](/carbon/core-concepts/activity-sources.md) list under Carbon, open the source you want to adjust and go to its Activity tab. Click the **Manual Entry** button at the top of the Activity table to open the **Manual Adjustment** dialog for that source.

Use the arrows either side of the period label at the top left to move between financial years. Adjustment rows are scoped to the year you're viewing, so switch years to see or add entries for a different period.

## Adding an adjustment

Click the **+ Adjustment Row** button to add an editable row at the top of the table, then fill in:

<table><thead><tr><th width="150.75">Field</th><th>Description</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>From</td><td>Start date of the period the value applies to</td></tr><tr><td>To</td><td>End date of the period the value applies to.</td></tr><tr><td>Activity</td><td>The activity value to add, in the source's unit of measure (shown in the column header, eg. TKM)</td></tr><tr><td>Cost</td><td>The cost value to add, in the source's cost currency (shown in the column header, eg. NZD)</td></tr><tr><td>Commentary</td><td>Optional note explaining the reason for the entry</td></tr><tr><td>Attachment</td><td>Optional supporting file, eg. evidence for the correction</td></tr></tbody></table>

Enter a positive value to top up activity or cost that's missing from the period, or a negative value to reduce a period that's overstated. You can remove an unsaved row with the bin icon before saving.

{% hint style="info" %}
If the From / To dates span multiple months, data is apportioned by the number of days in the matching window per month. This can result in fractional data being added.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
Manual adjustments are aggregated the same way as ingested data, using the source's Aggregation Methodology and the date you assign to the entry. See [Activity Sources](/carbon/core-concepts/activity-sources.md) for how SUM and LATEST aggregation behave.
{% endhint %}

## Correcting a saved adjustment

Once you save an adjustment row it locks, shown with a padlock icon, and can't be edited or deleted from the dialog. To correct a mistake, add a new row with an offsetting value instead. For example, to undo an entry of `298`, add a new row for the same period with `-298`.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Saved adjustments immediately change the source's reported activity and cost for that period, which can flow through to emissions calculations and reporting. Confirm the period and values are correct before saving.
{% endhint %}

## Reviewing the impact and saving

Before saving, check the totals at the bottom of the dialog. **Original Activity** and **Original Cost** show the source's ingested totals for the financial year you're viewing, while **Adjusted Activity** and **Adjusted Cost** show the totals including your new row(s). Select **Save** to commit the adjustment, or **Discard** to close the dialog without saving.
