# Units of Measure

Supported units, aliases, and custom unit setup for incoming data.

## System Units of Measure

BraveGen supports the following units of measure, in alignment with the factors in our [Emission Factor libraries](/carbon/core-concepts/emission-factors/emission-factor-libraries.md). If the data you are loading uses units not outlined below, you will need to create corresponding [custom unit](#custom-units)[s](#custom-units) before the data can be processed by the system. You can see a full list of these under **Settings -> Units of Measure**. The system supports user defined 'aliases' which can be used to link a different spelling or symbol to an existing UoM.

## Custom Units

Custom units can be created to deal with incoming data that does not match the standard units covered by BraveGen system emission factors.

For inventory items attached to sources with custom units, you will need to either include a calculation to convert to a unit supported by the emission factor, or create a [custom emission factor](/carbon/core-concepts/emission-factors/custom-emission-factors.md) that uses your custom unit.

### Creating a Custom Unit of Measure

Custom units can only be created by users with admins or editor roles. Click the ' + Unit of measure' button to add a new custom unit of measure row. You will need to define:

* **Name**
* **Type** - Energy, Quantity, Volume, Weight, Area, Temperature, Cost, Distance, Pressure, Other
* **Symbol** - displayed in reports
* **Default Aggregation** - how multiple values across a time period are reported
  * Sum - add values together (standard for emission generating activity)
  * Latest - use the most recent (used for metrics, like star ratings)

### Deleting a Custom Unit of Measure

Custom units can only be deleted if they are not in use. This is indicated by a checkmark in the 'in use' column.
