# Scope 2

## Scope 2 emissions

Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased or acquired energy.

These emissions occur at the energy supplier’s facilities. Your organisation consumes the resulting electricity, steam, heat, or cooling.

Scope 2 does not include fuel burned in your owned or controlled equipment. Report those direct emissions in Scope 1.

### Report Scope 2 emissions

The GHG Protocol uses two complementary reporting methods for purchased electricity:

* **Location-based** reflects the average emissions intensity of the local grid.
* **Market-based** reflects qualifying contractual instruments, or the residual mix where applicable.

Report both methods when the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance requires dual reporting. Use the method that matches the available energy data and reporting boundary.
